thanks and ......

well i missed the streaming party.... and i have never been to their site before, so thanks for that -- too bad they don't have any video from before 95.... that was when i became too cool for Phish -- sorry but, their SCHTICK was amazing up through 93, 94.... then, around 95 they got really big FAST. and started playing the 10,000 and up seat venues -- that was the end for me.

anyway, i did BUY 4 VIDEOS from this 11/14/95 date and the quality of the video is great. and whenever i see fish and mike playing and HEAR them it still feels great -- THEY ROCK! i love the fishman/gordon team, they had an amazing rapport. but favorites of mine like FOAM, lose something outside of an intimate setting. it's hard to inject silly and whimsical in a 20,000 seat arena..... or maybe it had just worn thin in general by this point.

and while trey was still an amazing guitarist, they had started stretching out the jams on ENERGY ALONE at this point, lots of the melodic group improvisation dynamic was replaced by one exercise of TENSION and RELEASE after another -- amazing when YOU"RE THERE but it grows thin when your just sitting on the couch.....

I turned on to Phish when I heard a Billy Breathes tape, then I saw them on Austin City Limits TV show.
I was hooked...heard them live everytime they played the Shoreline from 1997 on. Yeah sure, they sing alot of inane lyrics, but are a monster Jam Band!!
I bet they'll have another resurgence when Trey gets fat and grows a beard-haha

hey rasta......

not trying to be a downer -- it is just the way it goes, like if you saw the dead in 69/70 and then next thing you know it;s 1989!

that;s what it was like for me with Phish -- got into them in 90/91 and then all the sudden in 95 they are MEGA HUGE -- it was never quite the same......

cheers

Good analysis, especially the growing thin when at home vs. the venue. I bust them out every now and again and appreciate Phish, but not an everyday listen. I do like their music up through 98, then it starts to taper for me. I did think the Farmhouse album was a pretty good studio release.

Glad to hear from you. Good karma and thoughts your way.
